1985 930 Turbo Sonderwunsch – “Coppa Florio”
Ordered new in 1985 at the Porsche factory, in Stuttgart, by the Fartak family – well known for their long-standing relationship with Porsche and their strong affinity for creative, Sonderwunsch configurations and specially for Coppa Florio Porsche’s. This very car has been the unknown predecessor and younger brother to the famous Coppa Florio 964 Turbo, Turbo S Leichtbau and 993 GT2, all from the same family and legacy. A story that would to this day, continue to inspire some of Porsche’s modern special wishes -Sonderwunsch- builds, such as the 992 GT3 RS’s and S/T.
This one-of-one Sonderwunsch 930 Turbo in Paint to Sample Coppa Florio (360) and special order Leather to Sample “Hellbeige” occupies a very special place within the early history of Porsche Sonderwunsch. Finished in one of the most distinctive and personal colors of the period, the car reflects a vision and a time when individual specification were still a deeply personal dialogue between customer and factory.
In addition to complete unique, tailor made, colors for both exterior and interior, additional Special Wishes complemented the factory build of this Turbo: White roof headlining -characteristic of earlier generations of 911-, rear fender air intakes, special wider side skirts, body colored Coppa Florio wheels, perforated leather speaker covers and special leather upholstered “everything” on the interior. Additional equipment included bumper impact absorbers, manual 2-point rear seat belts, electric passenger mirror, Blaupunkt Köln SQR 23 radio, alarm system, and sliding roof.
The build of OG-CY-101 -the original number plate from this Sonderwunsch Turbo- was conceived by the Fartak family, as an idea from father and son -Werner and Christoph-, with the help of “Porsche’s Mr. Special Wishes”: Rolf Sprenger. Also involved during the build process: Anatole Lapine, head of design at Porsche -known for creating famous liveries such as “Pink Pig” and “Hippie” for Porsche race cars, as well as for his involvement in the development of trans-axle Porsches-, who gave this Turbo a very special final touch before it left the factory – a story so genuine that, to this day, the Fartak family, the original owners, still remembers about.
Lapine recommended that in order to additionally emphasize the uniqueness of this Turbo -admiring it today, as if it needed additional special details…- they would hand-paint a dark blue pinstripe in the surroundings of the body-colored wheel centers. There’s more to the story: He stated to the Fartak family with a twinkle in his eye that in order to do a perfect job by pulse, the painter would need to drink half a bottle of whisky before.
Within the Fartak family archives, period photographies of this car that show this unique wheel detail, and an original letter from the family, together with the Sonderwunsch original built are available on this extraordinary vehicle’s history.
As per of today, this Turbo remains in exceptionally original condition. It has never been restored, retains the vast majority of its original factory paint, is accident-free and retains its matching-numbers drivetrain. This level of preservation reinforces its authenticity as a true survivor from the period. It stands today not only as a one-of-one factory commission, but also as a direct reflection of a time when Porsche Sonderwunsch work was defined by personal relationships, artistic freedom and the direct, personal involvement of high ranks in the company, rather than formalized programs.
